RONALDO NAMED IN EURO 2016 TEAM OF THE TOURNAMENT; BALE NOT INCLUDED

Despite missing most of the Euro 2016 final with a knee injury, Cristiano Ronaldo did enough to earn a spot in the team of the tournament.
trophyCristiano Ronaldo is one of four Portugal players to have been named in the official Euro 2016 team of the tournament, but Real Madrid team-mate Gareth Bale has missed out.
Portugal captain Ronaldo scored three goals and supplied three assists to help Fernando Santos’ side claim their country’s first major international trophy.
The Madrid star was replaced by Ricardo Quaresma in the 25th minute of Sunday’s 1-0 extra-time victory over hosts France, but his prior contribution had been enough to warrant a spot in the 11 players picked by a panel of experts.

Ronaldo is joined by fellow winners Rui Patricio, Pepe and Raphael Guerreiro, but Renato Sanches, named Young Player of the Tournament, is not included.
However, Ronaldo’s Madrid team-mate Bale has been overlooked despite scoring three goals and providing one assist in Wales’ march to an unprecedented semi-final, though Joe Allen and Aaron Ramsey make the cut.
Antoine Griezmann, named Player of the Tournament, scored six goals and laid on a further two and is joined in the XI by Dimitri Payet.
Germany are the only other nation to be represented, with Joshua Kimmich, Jerome Boateng and Toni Kroos making the grade.

MESSI QUITS NATIONAL FOOTBALL

Lionel Messi has retired from international duty after missing in a penalty shootout as Argentina lost a fourth major final in nine years.

"For me, the national team is over." he said after defeat by Chile in the Copa America final. "I've done all I can. It hurts not to be a champion."

Messi, 29, has won eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with Spanish side Barcelona.

But his only major international honour is Olympic gold at the 2008 Games.

As well as losing two Copa America finals on penalties to Chile, Messi was in the Argentina side beaten 1-0 by Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.

The forward, who was been awarded the Ballon d'Or five times, was also on the losing side against Brazil in the 2007 Copa America final.

"It's been four finals, I tried," added Messi, who made his debut for Argentina in 2005 and has played 113 times for his country.

"It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn't get it, so I think it's over.
"I think this is best for everyone. First of all for me, then for everyone.

"I think there's a lot of people who want this, who obviously are not satisfied, as we are not satisfied reaching a final and not winning it.

"It's very hard, but the decision is taken. Now I will not try more and there will be no going back."

Messi had scored five times at this year's Copa America, including a superb free-kick in the semi-final win over hosts the USA.

That goal made him his country's record scorer with 55 goals, eclipsing the 54-goal mark of striker Gabriel Batistuta.

MEET THE YOUNGEST 23 YEARS OLD CHAIRMAN IN BRITISH FOOTBALL, DAVID SHARPE

David Sharpe (born c. 1992) is a football club chairman with Wigan Athletic.
Sharpe who was educated at Shrewsbury School is the grandson of former chairman Dave Whelan and was appointed as Chairman on his grandfather's resignation in March 2015. At age 23, he became one of the world's youngest football bosses
His grandfather. Dave Whelan's dream of retiring and placing his grandson in charge of Wigan came true on Tuesday when David Sharpe was formally introduced as the club's new chairman.
The 23-year-old has a big job ahead of him with the Latics languishing in the Championship's bottom three after relegation from the Premier League in 2013.
Here. Sportsmail takes a closer look at the man tasked with reviving Wigan's fortunes. One day my (grand)son this will all be yours
Whelan identified Sharpe as a successor as long ago as 2011. According to a club insider he intensified his efforts to show him the ropes in the last 12 months.
Sharpe's all access pass, however, did not go down well with everyone. One former employee quipped: 'He was turning up in places you would not expect to see the chairman himself, let alone his grandson.'
A Sharpe cookie:
Sharpe, 23, attended Oxford Brookes University, failed to finish his studies - but has since impressed his granddad with his business acumen.
Whelan clearly feels comfortable with handing over the reins despite Sharpe's tender years and has often been heard singing his praises.

While most of us dread Christmas presents from the grandparents, Sharpe has no such issues.
No for him white socks or beige knitted jumpers. On December 24 last year Sharpe unwrapped a gift most could only dream of - a place on the board at a Championship football club.

WWE LEGENDS HULK HOGAN & THE UNDERTAKER TO STORM LAGOS FOR AMBODE’S ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

In a continuation of the Lagos state government’s drive towards using sports as a tool for development, plans are underway to mark the first anniversary of Governor Akinwumi Ambode with an intercontinental professional wrestling championship.
According to reports, the Nigerian Wrestling Federation have concluded plans to fly in the wrestling legend and his colleague, Undertaker, for the A+A Intercontinental Wrestle Force – which is one of the activities lined up to mark the governor’s one year in office.
Put together by the Nigerian Wrestling Federation (NWF) in alliance with the Current World Wrestling Federation, wrestlers from different parts of the world would be in Lagos to participate in the event that will hold in 14 centres in the three senatorial districts of Lagos.
In the words of the NWF’s president, Prince Olarenwaju Mohammed, the federation is glad to invite the wrestling legend, who also said he’s willing to visit Lagos.
“We have invited renowned wrestling champion, Hulk Hogan and Undertaker to be part of the show. Hogan specifically told us that he would like to come to Lagos once in his lifetime to see how the city looks like,” he said.
Continuing, he said, ‘The reason we are having the championship in multiple centres is to bring wrestling closer to the people at the grassroots. We want our people to see those wrestling stars who they normally watch on television live at their domain.
‘These centres include Epe, Alimosho, Badagry, Ojo, Ikorodu, Ikeja, Ifako Ijaiye, Agboyi Ketu, Eti Osa, Oshodi Isolo, Yaba-Mainland, Lagos Island, Surulere, while the grand finale will hold in Agege,” he said.
NWF president, Prince Olarenwaju Mohammed said the first-of-its kind event is a projection of the good governance of Ambode’s administration to the outside world.
“Our plan is to project Lagos to the outside world that the state is peaceful despite all the negative reports in the international media. I always tell people that we cannot quantify the benefits of staging international competitions in our community like the recently held Lagos City Marathon.
The Publicity Committee will embark on a series of events to bring awareness to the show which is slated for May.
