FELA DUROTOYE:

Wednesday, the 12th of May 1971 was a particularly remarkable day for Sisi Addy and Bros Toks as they welcomed the newest member of their family in Ibadan South West Nigeria. They named their third child and second son, Oluwafeolami; meaning(God has enlarged my territory).

Together with his brother Pade and sister, Jibike, the family moved to the university town of Ile-Ife, also in South West Nigeria in 1972; where Fela grew into one of the liveliest kids on the campus’ staff quarters.Ile-Ife would come to hold a special place in Fela's life as he was thoroughly educated there. First at the Staff Children's School (1974-1981) where he was a member of the Boys Scouts, School Band and played the lead role in the “Tragedy of Meggini” and then on, to Moremi High School (1981-1986) where he became the lead singer and keyboardist of the youth band, “The Midwaves”, who regularly featured on TV.
THE COLLEGE YEARS:
Fela moved onto the University for his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science & Economics        (1986-1991). Ever the entrepreneur, during his MBA (1995-1997), Fela started “The Pool Bar”, which was the number one Hang-Out on the campus.Interestingly, during this period, he had a 4-day one-on-one encounter with GOD in April 1997. It was during this experience that Fela became born again and life took on a whole new meaning.Having obtained his MBA and spurred on by his new found relationship with Jesus, Fela moved on from Ventures & Trusts to Phillips Consulting in 1998, where he rose to head the Customer Service Group until 2000 when he returned to acquire an M.Phil in Strategic Management at, yes you guessed it, OAU, Ife.
Wow! Away from all the unpleasant news that we seem to be hearing on a daily to very interesting and inspirational news. Motivational speaker and youth mobilizer, Fela Durotoye, 41, entered the history books by signing 10,000 of his books “17 Secrets of High Flying Students,” in 8 hours  49 minutes! In an event ahead of the Gemstone Group’s Global Reading Festival which comes to a climax with a simultaneous reading of the book in 17 cities and countries around the world, Fela Durotoye embarked on the laudable feat to create awareness for world peace. But before achieving the incredible milestone, Durotoye broke the record for ‘most number of books signed in one sitting by a single author’ announcing to the world.

Meet the man that has not had a bath for over six decades

This Iranian man you see above hasn't allegedly had a bath for 60 years. Daily Mail reports that 80 year old Iranian Amou Haji hasn't washed for 60 years because he believes being clean will make him sick, and his favourite food is rotten porcupine.

To relax he likes to sit down and have a smoke, from a pipe packed with animal faeces. Mr Haji says he chose this way of life after going through some emotional setbacks in his youth and since then - perhaps unsurprisingly - he has become a bit isolated.

His home is in Dejgah village in the southern province of Fars in Iran where, once, a group of young men offered to give him a shower - but luckily he managed to escape.
At night he either sleeps in a hole in the ground, which is quite like a grave, or in an open brick shack which concerned locals built for him.
But don't think Mr Haji doesn't look after himself - when he wants to look his best he uses car mirrors for grooming, The Tehran Times reported.
And, when he needs a haircut, he simply burns his locks in a fire.

As for clothing, he wears rags and, in the winter, a war helmet to ward off the cold .
The last record of longest time going without showers belonged to a 66-year-old Indian man, Kailash Singh, who had not taken a bath over 38 years.

Mr Haji claims to have beaten that.

Tax payers' Squander - GEJ bill for a private jet

The Presidency has made a proposal for an upfront deposit of N1.5billion for a brand new private jet, which will become the Presidential Air Fleet’s (PAF) 11th aircraft. This figure is contained in the details of the 2014 Appropriation Bill presented to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan through the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The Federal Government has budgeted another N1.52b for the maintenance of the 10 aircraft currently in the PAF in 2014 and it is now set to spend just about that amount on a new one. This prodigious squandering of taxpayers’ money is reckless and unacceptable.

The PAF already boasts two Falcon 7X jets, two Falcon 900 jets, Gulfstream 550, one Boeing 737 BBJ (Nigerian Air Force 001 or Eagle One), and Gulfstream IVSP. Others are one Gulfstream V, Cessna Citation 2 aircraft and Hawker Siddley 125-800 jet. The combined estimated value of the PAF is about $390.5m (N60.53bn). According to industry experts, it costs a minimum of 20 per cent of that figure to maintain them annually. So we’re looking at about $58.57m (N9.08bn) yearly for maintenance. Private jets are money guzzlers either in the air or on land.
The proclivity of this administration for frivolous spending is well documented.  The government has been severely criticised in the past for the colossal amount of embezzlement, rip-off and wastage that have been its hallmark. The rationale behind this new aircraft in the PAF must be condemned .
Apparently to hush the cacophony of voices that will rise in opposition to the proposed new jet, the Presidency in its usual deceitful manner, has made part payment for what can best be described as a completely unnecessary toy of comfort.  The Nigerian PAF is already bloated. If he can’t travel in any of the 10 jets in PAF’s possession, then there’s absolutely no need for an eleventh one.
At a time we would think the numerous editorials and op-eds have succeeded in curbing waste and frivolities which this government now symbolises, then came this new proposal. We must continue to resist their recalcitrance. This lavish lifestyle must be checked.
The waste in government is also demonstrated in  the large entourage that accompanies Mr. President on his foreign trips. One can only imagine the millions spent on hotel bills and estacodes that accrue to the government officials. According to reports, world leaders are stunned at the strangely large number of such entourage. The recent trip of President Jonathan in the first week of January this year to Kenya and the hullabaloo about his entourage are apt.
It is shocking that the same people who have budgeted millions for this new flying toy are aware that the country has no national carrier as I write. It is shameful that the PAF has about the third largest fleet of aircraft in the country with a total of 10 aircraft, coming closely behind Aero Contractors with 12 and Arik Air, the largest commercial airline in Nigeria with a fleet of 23 aircraft. Nigeria happens to be one of the few countries in the world with such a large PAF. It is ridiculous that this is happening in an aviation sector that is dominated by foreign airlines. Nigerian carriers are going under due to cash constraints. Countries with visionary and focused leadership like Malaysia, Ghana, South Africa and a host of others across Europe maintain only one aircraft in their PAF.
As the much publicised take-off of the proposed national carrier before the end of the year failed, it won’t be out of place to make a case for the government to seriously consider converting the PAF to a national carrier, retaining one or two for use by Mr. President and his co-travellers. The private jets can form the hub of the charter aircraft.
What better example than the one given by a national leader like British Prime Minister, David Cameron, in 2010 when he slummed it in business class of a commercial airline flying from London to Washington. He was caught on camera swanning around the world in hired jets. He flies around the world on British Airways! Had it been in Nigeria, security risks, flight delays are few of the sundry reasons government officials would have given for not flying commercial airlines. The U.S. President, Barack Obama, reportedly pays for his food, ours spends almost a billion naira to entertain himself and members of his government yearly.
It amazes many Nigerians who watch in utter disbelief the profligate nature of government.
This government has embarked on some white elephants like mere renovation of official residences with billions of naira. We can recall the uproar that greeted the N2.2billion allocated to the construction of a plush banqueting hall, last year, with the lame excuse that what the country had was way smaller than what other tiny African countries have.
In this part of the world, only citizens are asked to cut costs, make sacrifices; the pains of today are incomparable to the joy of tomorrow are some of the ‘blues’ we get daily from government. In the same breath, political office holders, to our chagrin, take their spending to absurd heights. Sacrifice is a language that the over 60 per cent impoverished population must understand while our leaders continue their obsession with living in opulence. They sacrifice nothing. In these circumstances, how do you convince the various labour unions who are waiting on the flanks to embark on strike to press home their demands that there are no funds to meet their grievances? Downturn in government’s finances would be a hard sell in a situation where the Presidency is competing with individuals for private jets.
It is lamentable that at a time when we still haven’t seen the infrastructural dividends promised with funds freed up from the partial fuel subsidy removed, the President is more concerned with splashing billions on banqueting hall, renovation of residential apartments and covert medical tourism trips abroad.
This waste in the face of limited resources extends to the federal bureaucracy that has brought about an increase in the number of ministries from 21 to about 40 with the number of ministers jumping in equal quantum or even more.

Dangote on Twitter … says “Nothing is Impossible”

Barely 72 hours after Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, joined the micro-blogging service, Twitter, thousands of Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora have extended a hand of fellowship to him by subscribing to his tweets.
As at 5pm on yesterday, Thursday, the President/Chief Executive of the pan-African conglomerate, the Dangote Group, had attracted a followership of over 30,000 users on the social network.
A check through his Twitter page shows that his followers are not limited to ordinary Nigerians who make use of the social service but include serving lawmakers in the National Assembly, past public office holders, children of past Nigerian leaders, as well as top shots in the nation’s entertainment industry.
Some of the high profile Nigerians following Africa’s most powerful man include Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; former Governor of Kwara State, and Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Bukola Saraki; and Vice-Presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria in the 2011 general elections, Fola Adeola.
Others include a former Chief Executive Officer of the United Bank for Africa, Tony Elumelu; daughter of late military dictator, Sanni Abacha, Gumsu; artistes such as Dare Art Alade, Dr. Sid, Rugged Man, and Weird MC, Dbanj, Sean Tizzle among many others.
Surprisingly, despite the huge reception he received on Twitter, Dangote has yet to deem it fit to reciprocate the gesture by subscribing to the tweets of any of these Nigerians following him on the social platform.

In fact, Dangote is not at present following any Nigerian on Twitter, as he has signified preference for the tweets of a few of his billionaire colleagues; his manufacturing conglomerate, Dangote Group; the World Economic Forum and the Kofi Annan Foundation.
The billionaires Dangote follows on the social network include the former Chief Executive Officer of General Electric Corp., Jack Welch; Chairman of the world’s largest personal-computer software company, Microsoft, Bill Gates; and Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of General Electric, Jeff Immelt.
Dangote’s decision not to follow any Nigerian is very much unlike some prominent Nigerians who make use of Twitter. For instance, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who follows only 26 people on the social network, deemed it fit to follow some Nigerians.
Meanwhile, Dangote has broken his silence online, saying he is “glad” to make use of Twitter. In his first and only tweet, he gave a word of encouragement to many Nigerians who have been asking him for advice on business success saying, “nothing is impossible” to those who pursue their dreams with commitment.
“Glad to be on Twitter. Wishing you all a prosperous New Year. Stay positively committed to achieving your dreams, nothing is impossible,” Dangote said in his first tweet.

President Jonathan Promises Stable Power By June

President Goodluck Jonathan, says power will be reasonably stable across the country before the middle of 2014.

Speaking to a congregation of Christian Faithful in a New Year Service in Abuja on Wednesday, Jonathan promised that his administration would do its best to ensure a vibrant economy, create more jobs, uphold good governance and provide food for Nigerians.
The year 2014 is a special year in Nigeria’s history, as it marks modern Nigeria’s 100 years of existence.
“All Nigerians should endeavour to know the areas they will participate as we celebrate the nation’s centenary,” Jonathan said.
He pleaded with politicians to place priority on the interest of the country more than their individual interests.
“As we continue to play politics in that direction. Leaders will come and go but the country will stay,” he said.
The president said that the expected stable power supply before the middle of the year would stimulate the economy.
